Changes in Library Staffing from 12/2004 <http://www.libraries.phila.k12.pa.us/pdf/directory-dec2004.pdf>

[Ed. note: This web page was made inaccessible 2010-2011.]

to 10/24/08 (SDP Human Resources Seniority List)

Notes:

  • The changes listed below are from 12/2004, the last time the SDP School Library Directory was up-dated, to 10/2008, when the SDP Human Resources Seniority List became available for comparison.

  • IT CANNOT BE ASSUMED THAT A SCHOOL LIBRARY OR CERTIFIED LIBRARIAN IS AVAILABLE TO ANY STUDENT AT TIME OF NEED DURING THE SCHOOL DAY. Principals may assign certified librarians to teach classes on a fixed schedule. During those class times the library and certified librarian are not available to the rest of the student body.

Definitions:

  • Certified librarians are highly qualified teachers whose subject specialty is School Library.
  • Teachers are highly qualified in a subject other than School Library.
  • LIMAs (Library Instructional Media Assistants) are high school graduates, at minimum, with additional clerical training. They are not teachers.
  • At a principal's discretion and direction, other employees may staff a school library alone, i.e., SSAs (Supportive Service Assistants, high school graduates at minimum, non-teaching), bus matrons, etc.
  • Decimal numbers after a school name indicate the number of days of the week that the library staff is in attendance. Each .2 equals one day of the week. Ex. (.6) equals three days of the week.

Comparison of numbers over time:

  • As of 10/24/08, 77 certified librarians are employed by the SDP. There were 91 in 12/2004 and 176 in 1991.
  • 26 LIMAs are employed by the School District of Philadelphia as of 10/2008. One of the current LIMAs works with a certified librarian. There were 30 LIMAs in 12/2004 and 114 in 1991.
  • There are now 281 schools <http://www.phila.k12.pa.us/about/> viewed 11/1/08. In June 2004, there were 266 schools; in 1991 there were 249 schools.
  • As of 9/1/08, two new certified librarians and 3 new LIMAs were hired by the District.
